What is the API 653 standard?
API 653 (Tank Inspection, Repair, Alteration, and Reconstruction) is the American Petroleum Institute's international standard setting the minimum requirements to maintain the integrity of welded steel storage tanks operating at atmospheric or low internal pressure.
The standard provides guidance for the inspection, assessment, repair and alteration of existing tanks, making it possible to determine their fitness for continued service. API 653 applies to tanks originally built to API 650, API 12C, or equivalent standards.
With Resolución 277/2025 of Argentina's Energy Secretariat now in force, inspection to API 653 has become mandatory for every hydrocarbon storage tank in the country, with the aim of guaranteeing the operational safety of the facility.
